Americana at the Bookstore: Housing Works presents LIVE FROM DOWN HOME!

Join Housing Works Bookstore and The Jones Street Boys as we kick off a monthly celebration of roots music at the Bookstore. On Thursday, June 26, at 8pm the first LIVE FROM DOWN HOME will feature the indie folk singer Luke Temple and the The Jones Street Boys. Free admission, cheap drinks, and a guaranteed good time.

The Jones Street Boys will open the show and host the evening. Luke Temple will headline, followed by an open jam session for whoever brings an instrument. If you bring an instrument and you play it, you get $1 off drinks all night! Each month will feature special headlining acts followed by open bluegrass jam. All proceeds benefit Housing Works Inc.

The Jones Street Boys make American music that is both contemporary and classic in its scope - veterans of New York City's roots music community, their debut album, Overcome, was released in October of 2007 on Brooklyn-based Smith Street Records, which featured guest lead vocals from Jon Langford (Mekons/Waco Bros.) and received universally glowing reviews.

Jake James is a Brooklyn based singer / songwriter / multi-instrumentalist / engineer / producer. A month ago he found himself bandless and decided to start his solo project, Jake James and the Sexual Freedom Riders. The Concept of the band is to explore human behavior surrounding sexuality and morality, to question the established societal norms surrounding sexuality and, hopefully, help defeat institutionalized, sex based discrimination. Stratospheerius is playing its only New York City show this summer on July 11 at Fat Baby, 112 Rivington Street (between Ludlow & Essex) at 9 PM. This is near the F and V subways. The venue phone is 212-533-8888.

Also on the bill is a electric/classical quartet called Metro Strings, which features Stratospheerius' leadsinger/violinist Joe Deninzon, Brazz Tree's Mazz Swift on electric violin/vocals, David Gotay playing electric cello/vocals, and drummer Alan Camlet. Metro Strings perform at 8 PM.

Stratospheerius has showcased its "psychojazz trip funk" at colleges, festivals, and clubs throughout the US.  Conjuring a "Demented Fiddler on the Roof" aura, Joe has worked with artists including Ritchie Blackmore, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Sheryl Crow.

Originally from the Lawrence, Kansas, Rachel Haught now lives and makes music in Brooklyn, New York. She records everything on her Mac, composes everything in little notebooks with her Nightmare Before Christmas pen, and mixes and masters it all herself, painstakingly, lovingly.

Rachel's currently at work on her debut EP tentatively titled "The Underground" and collaborating with Graham Massey (808 State) on what she describes as "hot shit for da club". She's been singing since she was six.

O Pioneers new EP, "Alas, I was no swimmer" takes it's title from the classic folk ballad "Oh my Darling Clementine" in which the bereaved but lazy baladier laments "But, alas, I was no swimmer, so I lost my Clementine" as he watches her drown in the river. In response, O Pioneers singer / songwriter Sara Shaoul takes up the muted voice of the folk heroine.

Her songwriting often draws inspiration from classic literature and poetry, from Willa Cather (as the band name implies) to Amy Lowell, who’s epic poem of love and murder, "Evelyn Ray" is reconfigured as an evocative, minimalist ballad. On the EP’s first track, Baudelaire’s “A Une Passante” inspires a broken- hearted plea to an Ipod-dependent passerby that "Everything's a song, and you don't hear me when i call."

O Pioneers showcases their unique folk/pop sound, reminiscent of the Decembrists and Cat Power, at the Living Room on 6/28 at 10pm.

Adam Kautz is a multi insturmentalist who can not contain his desire to record and create, nor can he contain his fondness of most music from proto-punk to motown and gyspsey to a train horn, so he records it all in his own east village apartment.
