The York Region is one of the fastest growing cities in Canada and this means that businesses need experienced and skilled employees to assist them in expanding. At the same time there is an untapped resource of good, eager and skilled job seekers needing exciting career opportunities.
The problem is that many companies have either disregarded these people or do not know what they can do to help them expand and grow their business. These people are of course, Job seekers with disabilities, who are often overlooked as companies believe they will cost more in insurance, workers compensation, changes to the office or building etc. In reality, there are many intelligent, skilled workers with disabilities with as much desire to achieve their full potential as any non-disabled person. Being disabled does not mean that they are unable, just that they do things a little differently sometimes. Often the disabled person is more determined to work hard and make the best of a career opportunity.
When seeking employees for a job opening, one of the most efficient and cost effective methods of finding someone suitable is to contact a job agency. There are those that will assist you with placing a disabled job seeker as well as complying with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA) that will be effective in January 2012.
A job agency regularly advertises in the job market as well as attends and holds job fairs. A good agency will have a pool of resumes from eager job seekers. They will already undertaken the hard job of sorting through and discarding inappropriate resumes, checked any references and found only those job seekers that have the necessary skills and experience that you are seeking. This is an arduous task that is best undertaken by someone that regularly does this kind of work.
When you approach a job agency with a job opening, they should within a few days be able to provide you with a number of resumes from suitable pre-screened, candidates for you to interview. This means that you will reap the benefits of dependable, staff with increased loyalty, consistent productivity as well as a reduced turnover of staff.
So if your challenge when seeking qualified employees in the York area is one or more of the following:
• Finding someone with the correct skills and experience.
• Reducing your staff turnover so as to decrease staffing costs and increase productivity.
• Finding staff that will fit in and blend with the current company culture.
• Finding staff that are dedicated and/or care about their jobs.
• Keeping staff seeking costs down.
• Reducing the time spent on finding new staff.
Then first of all use a job agency and secondly consider hiring a disabled person. It might just be the best human resources decision you make when seeking employees.
One Voice Network was established in 2008 to support agencies that provide employment services to job seekers with disabilities and employers who wish to become equal opportunity employers.
