An Overview of External Basement Waterproofing Solutions in Toronto

When you have moisture or even worse, water in your basement and examination shows it is coming from outside of your building, then there are a number of basement waterproofing solutions that can be implemented. Not only is water damage very costly but they also devalue your home or commercial building. Most home buyers look for evidence of damp and water seepage, particularly in any basements. There are some long technical terms attached to the external waterproofing solutions to treat a wet basement, but they generally fall into the following processes:

• 
  Damp proofing membranes for standard non-retained walls.
• Elastomeric Polyurethane membranes that are generally used on flat and inverted roofs, balconies and terraces. If you have a swimming pool, these types of membranes are also useful.
• If you have sloped surfaces or live in a very cold area there are additives that can be added to the above membranes.
• Cementitious products are used on lift shafts, ring beams and retained slabs.
• There are cavity membrane waterproofing systems suitable for cavity wall areas and sheet membranes for flooring areas.

The cause of a wet basements inhouses and commercial buildings can usually be related to problems with their foundations. When foundation seepage require some kind of external basement waterproofing solution the soil around the walls is first of all exposed. The walls are then fully inspected and any cracks and structural problems are repaired. Once this has been done, the walls and all the exposed footings are waterproofed with a sealant, which is a rubberise urethane. The entire area is then sheathed with a waterproof dimple membrane. If there are any problems with tiles they are replaced and then covered with gravel and a geo-membrane. Finally the walls are backfilled and the wall restored to working order.

For difficult areas in the basement that are experiencing water seepage, most experienced basement waterproofing companies in Toronto will recommend that a sump pump is used to collect all excess water and then discharge it away from the building.
