Because there are so many variables to consider, making a quick and easy recommendation to move to white LEDs is not possible. To get a jump start on the future, consider each light source in each room and determine what the primary purpose is. Once you have done this, review the following points to determine where on the priority list buy list every change made. Here are some general guidelines to help you determine if an LED upgrade is the right choice for you:
1.Is the lighting placed in a home where the primary residents are elderly or have disabilities?
If the LED replacements produce sufficient levels of light, LED option is ideal for use in homes where security is a top priority. Knowing that a sick or elderly person will not need to change a burned out bulb again can provide peace-of-mind.
2.Is the initial cost of a primary factor in deciding whether to upgrade?
The actual type of white LED market means that prices are still relatively high, especially compared to traditional lighting. Being an early adopter means paying a premium, you are comfortable with knowing that you would have paid less for the same technique if you had expected?
3. If the light is in bright daylight, sunlight or an area with high heat?
High levels of heat will significantly shorten the life of some LEDs, especially white LEDs. When considering LEDs, try to ensure that both the armature and the site allow for adequate passive cooling to avoid color shift issues and life. This is a much bigger problem when considering retrofit lamps versus considering a "total package" LED luminaire and lamp.
4. If you need to reduce the heat dissipation from a traditional bulb?
In bathrooms, laundry rooms and small spaces, conventional lighting produce uncomfortable heat. LED lighting is great for these areas because they produce no heat and therefore cost less to highlight areas with LEDs gives much less of a challenge.
5. Is the lighting is in an area with rough service or extreme environments?
Garage door openers, unheated / cooled utility room and outdoor workshops set extreme demands lighting equipment. When possible, rather than retrofit bulbs consider a "total package" LED fixture that has been designed from the ground up to effectively use LEDs.
8.Is the light output and the LED version acceptable quality compared to existing lighting?
With the variety of technology available light (incandescent, fluorescent, LED, etc) the only way to get an accurate idea of ââhow the lighting will accomplish is to compare the intensity of light or temperature specifications lumen and color instead of power as typical of most of us raised with the traditional lighting in the house. The Department of Energy has created a standard "lighting facts" label similar in concept to the nutrition label found in foods, to help consumers compare lighting.
9. Are the bulbs you are considering replacing difficult access or reach?
If, LED replacements are great candidates, because once they are changed, you will probably never have to change them again, since LEDs do not "burn" like a conventional bulb.
10.. You're replacing all the bulbs in a particular area or just a single bulb?
If you do not know the color temperature of the lighting throughout the room, try to be consistent in any lighting technology you choose. For example, if your room mainly uses halogen lighting, it is likely that the warm color temperature change and a reading lamp for single LED lighting with a temperature cooler not only be perceptible, but can also be a distraction.
11. Will the energy savings and / or return on investment (ROI) make it useful at this point? Prepare an energy audit using free web calculators to determine the amount of money you will save on energy and the potential return on investment is.
